4 Things to Consider While Buying Bearings

Bearings are an essential component of almost every piece of machinery. Today, just like any other thing, you can easily buy bearings online. The write-up covers the basic considerations that determine the cost and performance of a bearing, allowing you to make an informed selection when choosing your next set of bearings.

Size

Let us take an example of skating applications. Bearings used in skating applications are usually sized for 8mm axles. These are also termed standard 608 bearings. In comparison, 7mm (627) bearings are quite uncommon, while additional sizes such as Micro (688) are only hardly found. The only true limitation when it comes to bearings is that you should buy the size that your axles and rims are designed to use.

Material

Bearings work best when friction is low. Hence, materials have an important impact on performance. Many bearings are made of steel alloys that are both strong and inexpensive. Look for bronze, titanium, and especially, ceramic components or coatings, as these will enhance a bearing's resistance, longevity, and efficiency. Ceramic bearings are widely considered to be the best that money can buy.

Number of Balls

This is one of the most important factors that ensure a good balance of acceleration, durability, and speed. For instance, in skating boards, six ball bearings are deemed ideal because they roll longer and produce less friction which makes them ideal for skating at high speeds.

Serviceable vs Sealed

Replaceable shields or plastic retainers on serviceable bearings enable you to cleanse and re-lubricate your bearings. Most high-end bearings are replaceable, allowing you to maintain the ideal roll and extend the bearing's life. Sealed bearings feature non-removable covers that help keep hazardous debris out, but they cannot be cleaned and must be replaced if they are not working as expected. Sealed bearings are ideal for skaters who do not want to deal with bearing maintenance, but they lack the efficiency of serviceable bearings.

By keeping the aforementioned things in mind, buy bearings would not be a hassle anymore.
