What are Cylindrical Roller Bearings

Cylindrical roller bearings are a common type of roller bearing, which, as the name suggests, use cylinders to reduce friction while facilitating movement between the moving parts of a machine. The cylindrical rollers used in the bearings maintain linear contact with the raceways. Cylindrical bearings are very commonly used because they have a high radial load capacity and are most suitable for higher speed applications as compared to other types of roller bearings.

Types of Cylindrical Roller Bearings

There are basically three types of cylindrical roller bearings:

  • Single Row Cylindrical Roller Bearings: These bearings use cylinders as rolling elements, which are guided by the ribs of the inner or outer ring. This is the most popular type of cylindrical roller bearing because of its easy mounting and dismounting. However, single row bearings are unable to support high radial loads for some applications. This is when the need for double row and multi-row cylindrical roller bearings arises as they offer greater radial load carrying capacity.
  • Double Row Cylindrical Roller Bearings: Double row cylindrical bearings are most commonly used in applications where thin-walled bearings are required. For example, in the main shafts of machine tools, rollers in rolling machines, in printing equipment, etc. You can mount different components of these bearings separately as well, which facilitates efficient mounting. It also helps make inspection and maintenance easier.
  • Four Row Cylindrical Roller Bearings: Four row cylindrical bearings are widely used in the necks of rolling machine rollers because of their capability of accommodating only radial loads. These bearings are designed to withstand the pressure generated by heavy rolling loads. You can use these cylindrical roller bearings under extreme operating conditions as well.

Common Uses

Because of their greater radial load carrying capacity, ability to work in high-speed applications, and many other advantages, cylindrical roller bearings find use in a number of applications. Some of the main industries that majorly use cylindrical roller bearings include:

  • Oil and gas
  • Gearboxes
  • Wind turbines
  • Machinery
  • Electric motors
  • Material handling
  • Pumps
  • Steel mills

The right cylindrical roller bearing should always be chosen based on the application it is intended for, expected load, space available, etc.
